1993 nissan sentra camshaft timing chain noise?—by John D

I have a noise which sounds like the two brackets on the top small chain that drives the cams…top one is a guide?? bottom right a tensioner? how hard is it to replace them both selling car cheap just put in electric fuel pump dont want too much money going into it…the front of the head looks like it has an access cover?? do I take off the front motor mount bracket to gain access to them?? Is it a rather easy job??? Thanks John

I am assuming your is a GA-16 engine? two chains and four sprockets. Most of the time the lower chain is the noisey one the front of the engine lower guide breaks off falls into the oil pan and the bottom tensioner rail cannot soak up the slack. If you are brave enough to remove the timing cover oil pan and water pump dive right in. Nissan Service manual is really helpful lining up the new chains guides tensioners. Do it soon as the loose chain tends to wear a hole into the timing chain cover. Look very carefully at the sprockets I have seen the teeth worn completely off of the top dual chain sprocket.
