Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T - a few problems?—by babycocopop
I have a VW Golf 1.8T, about 2001. It sputters occasionally when I start up and just recently seems to be sluggish when accelerating. The STOP CHECK COOLANT display lit up the other day so I put in some diluted antifreeze and got the level back up. Now when I drive it still says STOP CHECK COOLANT all the time? I’m going to take it in for another service but I just don’t trust those garages. Is the air filter easy to change? Where is it cos it’s not in my manual?
I am not a mechanic but speak fluent French and Spanish if anyone needs help in return for their help!!??
Thanks

i agree with rob. check eveything that you can to the best of your knowledge. if you cant find anything abnormal then take your car to a garage and have your cooling system pressure tested. this will tell you if there is an external coolant leak or if it could be internal in the engine , like a blown hed gasket or cacked head.
if they say its a major problem take it to another garage for second opinion, and quote.
the air filter is a minor job.
i wouldnt worry about the service until you get the coolant problem sorted.
hope this helps. you can contact me if you need more info.
good luck
