2008 Maybach 62 S
The rear-wheel-drive 62 S is over 20 feet long, but its forward thrust is so linear it felt like the rest of the world was being jerked backward around our rocket ship as it glided over the pavement. It was kind of strange, really.

The 62 S was designed to be the most passenger-friendly of all passenger cars, so its extreme performance is purposely muted by sheets of acoustic insulation, intricately molded seals and layers of sound-deadening film, both in the front and rear windscreens and the specially laminated side glass.

The engineering is impressive. The styling is not. It has no presence apart from size, but then so does a school bus. People who spend this kind of money want to be seen, which is why the Rolls Royce is doing so well, and the Maybach not.The S class Benz looks far nicer. The Maybach looks like some weird Korean limo copy of a Benz.

Desmo: you’ll love this one.
Was walking along Park Avenue here in NYC a couple summers ago, long day at work, just getting some air. I like to think that I can identify anything almost instantly, but the large sedan parked at the curb in front of me was a mystery. Odd headlights, big stand-up hood ornament, kind of dull contouring and slatted grille. The voice in my head said, “Huh. Hyundai’s come out with a big one. When did this happen?” Lo and behold…Maybach.
I cannot for the life of me figure out what the appeal of the Maybach might be. It’s not in the same class as the English stuff, it’s not different enough from the S-Class to make much sense. Barring the multiple yards of legroom in back, maybe it’s just a snob/bling thing.
On that point, be glad you haven’t seen the pimpster/hussla/moron in my neighborhood who tarted up his white-paint-dipped Gelaendewagen with those oversized “M” logos. Made it look like the staff vehicle for some sci-fi fascist military government.
