  • Thecarconnection—STYLING:Reviewers are ambivalent about the 2009 BMW 5-Series sedan’s styling, but the wagon’s elongated silhouette is widely appreciated;PERFORMANCE:The 2009 BMW 5-Series has some brilliant engine options and smart-shifting transmissions, but its optional active steering is a blemish on otherwise world-class dynamics;QUALITY:Not everyone is happy about the layout of the 2009 BMW 5-Series interior, but it scores high for its almost absolute comfort and quiet;SAFETY:The 2009 BMW 5-Series has plenty of safety features, but it’s a severe underachiever in crash tests;FEATURES:The sky’s the limit here with features; the 2009 BMW 5-Series is almost a perfect 10, if it weren’t for the still-difficult iDrive interface.
  • Newcartestdrive—The BMW 5 Series is a true driver’s car among mid-sized luxury sedans. It mixes comfort, performance, high-tech features and passenger-friendly accommodations in a fairly compact package. Any 5 Series is remarkably well balanced, and satisfying to own and drive.

About BMW

image
Aeronautics, motorcycles and automobiles are all part of BMW’s long-standing history, which dates back to 1916. In 1986, the Bavarian brand made its debut in Canada as a full-on car maker and no longer as a mere importer. Its network of 38 concessionnaires is well established in the country. Among the lineup are various sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons from the 1-, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series. The X3 and X5 SUVs and the sporty Z4 target specific customers, while the ultra-high performance M-Series models (3, 5 and 6) appeal to the most hardcore driving enthusiasts.

Love 550i Sedan, really a drivers car. If you want to connect with the road, BMW is the only car. I have a 2005 545i sport, awesome performance…great acceleration, amazing handling, comfortable and stable on the road no matter what the driving condition.

I have owned infiniti and acura before and while those are great cars and a better overall value, this BMW (my first) is the most fun to drive of any car I have owned.

Plenty has been written about the iDrive, so I won’t go on here. Newer model years have updated software and interface that is much more intuitive and user-friendly. Only other thing I would say is you don’t buy this car based on iDrive and cup holders. If slick nav softward and cup holders are important, but something else, this car is built to be pushed into corners and accelerated out.

I am concerned about the reliability, mine is now out of warranty. BMW does offer extended warranties and service plans. Have had a couple problems but all were covered under warranty.

528i Sedan is Typical, gorgeous BMW classic look on the outside – can’t be beat for distinctiveness and class. This “beast” a bit slow on acceleration, but can’t beat the ride once you get up to speed. Better, much smoother ride than the last model. Great lights, and driving position. Cup holders are silly. iDrive is confusing and gear shift lever a bit unintuitive, but any simpleton can eventually figure it out. If you are looking for status, luxury and an excellent drive then this BMW will be hard to beat. For value, go elsewhere – i.e., Japanese cars.

This 535xi Sedan was my 4th BMW and first 5 series. The car is solid as a rock, finish if great, and the twin turbo helps it to fly ! The biggest issue I have had is that the battery continues to drain, and the dealer says that is normal and to charge the battery at night. I have never had to do this with any car, and it seemsridiculous to me

Test drove the Lexus ES 350, Infiniti M35x and Hyundai Genesis first – but had to go with the Beemer. All of these competitor’s autos are very good (actually believe it or not the Hyundai Genesis was the best of the three – Hyundai is now a force to be reckoned with) – but none of the competitors come close to the handling characteristics of the BMW 5 series. This car is simply one of the best handling, most responsive sport luxury sedans I have driven to date at any price. You have incredible road feel, tighter steering and shorter braking distances than with the competitor’s autos. The car is actually as quiet as any of the competitors too! The Beemer wiil really bring a smile to your face once you test drive it. While it is generally true that the competitors’ cars are cheaper, you will find in today’s bad economy that Beemer dealers are willing to be very competitive. I leased the Beemer for about $50/month more than the competitor’s cars. You should also factor in that the Beemer is one of the few cars in its category that comes with Full Maintenance for 4 Years or 50K miles, whichever comes first – a great perq. Also have driven in the Mercedes E350 4matic and Audi A-6 3.2 quattro. These are also very tight handling cars with the Audi A-6 coming the closest in my opinion to the handling characteristics of the Beemer – but price is outrageous for a glorified VW product. Conclusion: if you want an extra special auto that will make you feel good about shelling out this much dough, the Beemer is the only way to go! It is truly the “ultimate driving machine”!
