to the GL320 BlueTEC,I had to think for awhile to come up with a “con”, and that about sums it up. It’s quieter that a Range Rover, rides much better than an X5 or Cayenne, and handles much better than the Land Cruiser it replaced. I’ve owned all four, and still have the Cayenne for shorter trips and to satisfy bouts of hooliganitis.
Bluetooth works every time, almost everything, including nav destinations, is accomplished by voice commands which are understood by the computer, the stereo sounds great whatever the source, the back-up camera picture is clear and in color, visability is good all aound, and the ride to your destination is just a pleasure.
The car has the typical MB long travel accelerator, but push it and it goes, while consistently returning much better than advertised mileage, with 28 mpg common at freeway speeds. Overall, since day one, I’ve averaged 22.1 mpg, and I don’t baby it. Five hundred miles plus per tank is common.
In six months of ownership, I’ve visited the dealer once for a tire rotation, and they aligned it as they noticed some wear (at no cost to me), and while there I had the oil changed although it was not yet required. It does require an oil that is not yet commonly available.
I’ve been very pleased so far, and I haven’t been looking for the next one yet, which usually occurs about now. It’s fun to drive, reliable, and doesn’t require a lot of feeding.

GL450 4MATIC, Ride, handling comfort, accelerate…. all things you are supposed to find out with a test drive.
Net, the GL is the best SUV in this class. Every car mag, even Consumer Reports will tell you this. Hanndles better and is more comfortable than the GM SUVs (all though I would say they are better values) and is bigger, faster and more comfortable than the Audi.
The reliability issue I have had was replacing the OEM Conti tires at 18,000 miles. I expected better tires on a Benz. The Michelins I replaced them with have gone 17k miles and might last another 17k.

We traded our Range Rover for a GL 320 with BlueTec because we wanted additional storage space and better gas mileage. We are getting both of these benefits but there are major negative tradeoffs. The seats are much less comfortable on the GL 320. We take frequent long trips and after 5 hours my back and butt are really sore. This is not something you would discover on a 15-20 minute test drive. The suspension is also very unforegiving and we are feeling highway bumps a lot more than in the Range Rover. If anyone has suggestions regarding tires/wheels I would like to hear them. Third row seating is nice but second row is tight if first row seats are back. Fit and finish is below the level of other MB’s we have owned. Overall, we liked the Rover better.
