  • Thecarconnection—STYLING:The 2009 Pontiac G6 coupe and sedan offer solid styling without breaking the bank, but the jury is out on the Convertible;PERFORMANCE:The performance of the 2009 Pontiac G6 Convertible is forgettable, and the coupes and sedans are competent though not inspiring, especially when it comes to handling;QUALITY:All three models of the 2009 Pontiac G6 offer comfortable seating, but their interiors feel cut-rate in quality;SAFETY:The 2009 Pontiac G6 coupe and sedan have decent crash-test scores and, in the GXP, a comprehensive set of safety features. This is my second GT Sedan g6. My first was a 05 with the panoramic sunroof. That was great in the summer but a lot of wind noise and rattling when closed. I had no problems with that car at all. I was so happy with it that I got the 08 with out the sunroof. I have had it for a year and a half and again no problems so far. When my American car bashing German friends start up. I have them drive my G6 and they tend to quiet down a little. It handles great and has plenty of get up and go when I need it. I average 23 to 24 mpg’s and I am a harsh driver. There isn’t that tinny feel to it like many Japanese cars. A very quiet and solid ride. Get one!

I have had this G6 GT as a rental while my car is in the body shop. I can’t give a long-term report or reliability report, but I can give impressions based on what is essentially a long-term test drive.

I never really liked Pontiac and didn’t expect much from this car. While some interior materials are on the cheap side (the dash has a lot of cheap, hard plastic), they are put together well. The controls have a solid, durable feel to them. The ride is very comfortable without taking away from the handling- I was surprised at both the ride quality and cornering. They aren’t up to the standards of BMW or Mercedes (though not bad in comparison) but they certainly are good for an affordable family sedan. While the V6 doesn’t give blistering acceleration, power delivery and acceleration is good, and the engine is very smooth. The car is very roomy and comfortable.

I actually like it almost as much as my car. My personal car, I drive a BMW. I will have to consider the G6 when I look for a second car in a year or two.

When I bought my 07 Pontiac G6 Convertable, I LOVED THE CAR! I received compliments from everyone I met or saw. However, after the first year, the honeymoon was definately over. During the 25 months I owned this car, I had the following issues:
1 – Convertable top wouldn’t open or close – had to replace the conv. top motor
2 – Passenger side window wouldnt close completely – had to replace the window motor
3 – Car wouldnt start – had to get towed – had to replace the alternator
4 – Car wouldnt start a week later – had to get towed again – had to replace the battery
5 – Car overheated in a bad neighborhood – had to add 1.5 gallons of 50/50 water/coolant in order to get home – had to replace the water pump
6 – 2 days later the engine was making a strange knocking noise – they had forgotten to bolt my engine back in properly after replacing the water pump!!
7 – Engine light coming on randomly (this happened previously with issues #3 and #4), so I made the decision to get rid of it before I had any more breakdowns! Paid $33k for a top-of-the-line model 25 months ago (included Premium and Sport packages), but struggled to get 16k for it (most places were offering at max 14.5k).

When Consumer Reports says “The G6 isn’t a very good car!” as the first line of their overall review, PLEASE LISTEN! It’s a beautiful piece of machinery, but WATCH OUT! Be prepared to know your dealership service advisor by name (heck, mine even knew my voice toward the end), and always keep emergency items (blanket, cell phone, water, coolant, jumper cables) with you in the car in case you break down (because, trust me, it happens a LOT)!

I am in the automotive industry myself (I am actually in customer service for a large component supplier to GM), so my continued employment depends on GM’s success. However, even the potential loss of my job could not get me to waste my money on another GM product after this experience. I now understand why they are in so much trouble!
