Can anyone help??, My Audi A4 avant 2.5 tdi wont start!!?— By crazyforbags2001
Hi all, I have a 2004 2.5 v6 tdi A4 avant, it turns over but wont start, every so often it will kick in for about a second and then continue to turn over for long periods without starting. the car has just had new wiring, engine and interior, also ecu, keys and clocks all from the same car. i have noticed a air bubble in the clear fuel line???? dont know if that as anything to do with it. do i need to have all the air bags in before it will start? please help.

That air bubble in the fuel line could be it, but when you try to start it pump the gas a little. If it just has the starting sound you should also listen for a click, it could be your starter which can be broken for many reasons. Also check the new spark plugs on the engine, because sometimes they gimp you by putting in old spark plugs (anything to make money). It could also be your battery and generator, have someone take cables to your car and rev their engine while you start it, if that works… then it could be your battery, if the battery is good when you take it to get checked at like any of those pepboys autozone, kragen places, then it could be the generator. But you definitely should look at the starter. One last thing, CHECK ALL THE FUSES in that fuse box… that could be completely screwing you also.

In simplistic terms, it needs three things to start. Fuel, spark, compression. Check to see which is missing, and correct the problem.
Take off the fuel line, put it in a empty bottle, turn it over and make sure you are getting a good fuel flow. If yes, pull a spark plug wire, and carefully check for spark by inserting a screwdriver and holding it near the engine block. Don’t touch anything but the handle. Do you get a good spark? Pull a spark plug and check with a compression tester. Good compression?

The tdi is a diesel, the injection pump and cam timing are really important if one is off the car will not start you need special tools to check , you do not have spark plugs if this is a diesel, you have glow plugs that heat the cylinders, if they are not working the car may not start. Your 04 audi has a coded key and if the key is not coded to the ecu the car will not start, it may act like it wants to start but but won’t. Another way to tell if your key is not coded to the car is look on the speedo turn on ignition, you should see a pic of a key ,as you crank the key should go off, if it flashes this means the key is not coded to the car.
More info
Are you sure you have diesel fuel and not gas, a common mistake.
Next remove one of the injector lines and try and start the car, see if you are getting fuel out the injector line, if not then either you have the fuel lines crossed or you have a blockage you will have to try and suck the fuel to the injection pump.
If there is fuel coming out the the line it is possible that the cylinder walls got washed down , you will need to put a little oil in each cylinder through the glow plug hole and turn the engine over a few times, then reinstall the glow plugs.
Is the injection pump timing correct. Also I think on this model there is a fuel pum,p relay on the fuse panel.
One other common problem is the stutter valve / egr valve gets stuck open, its at the back of the head, look for a vacume pod, there is a rod that attached to a lever, the lever must rest on the stop if it is raised the e ngine will not start.
