2009 BMW X5 3.0i or Mercedes Benz ML350 4-Matic?—By Smoke Weed
Hi, I know I should ask this in the cars section but I’ve only gotten 2 answers in the last hour and I know I’ll get more here. I’ll give 10 points to the best answer and it’s pretty easy.
My family is looking for a replacement of our 2006 Cadillac SRX. We have narrowed it down to the 2009 BMW X5 3.0i and the 2009 Mercedes Benz ML 350 4 Matic. After looking at both vehicles extensively, we like the X5 more. It looks better inside and out and is more exciting than the Mercedes. The only problems are that:
No.1: Both of the cars are similarly equipped but the BMW is being given at $61,000 (no negotiating) while the Mercedes is being given at $48,000 (the dealer is ready to negotiate).
No.2: We had just bought a BMW 3-Series a little less than a year ago. So it might be boring having two BMWs because the X5 just feels like a bigger version of our 3-series (although it is basen on the 5-series).
So my question to you is: Is it still worth getting the BMW? We like it better, but we are just not sure if it is worth it because it is a lot more expensive than the Benz and because we already have a BMW.
Is the ML350 a good vehicle? Do you think it’s better than the BMW? What is it’s advantages? Disadvantages? What are the advantages of the X5? Disadvantages? Is it also a good vehicle?

The ML350 is a good vehicle, however, I prefer the BMW X5 as well.
For an SUV you are looking for something more sporty. BMW qualifies that much better than the Mercedes. Looking at the Mercedes I believe the ML has more class, but the BMW X5 is a better car in general. Both cars drive very smoothly so it is hard to say which car performs better.
I would compare the ML350 more to the BMW X3 and the ML550 to the BMW X5.
The extra price is worth it.This is unbiased as I am more of a Mercedes fan than a BMW fan, but in terms of comparing the ML350 with the X5 the X5 takes it.

The ML350 is a very good vehicle, and I would buy it over the X5. While the X5 may be sportier, the ML is a smoother ride, more off-road/all-season capable, and the options and packages come cheaper. It’s disadvantages are that the handling may not be all that well.
The X5 is more powerful and has better, more agile, sporty handling, however it is stiff and not as smooth as the ML. And again, having another BMW may get old.

well my dad has mercedes-benz ml350 and my uncle has bmw x5 …after a comparison made we found out that the bmw engine (3.0l) is not faster than the ml(3.5l and 3.2l) and in a comparison made in offroad the ml also catches up the x5 . now if we want to compare between x5 look and ml look i prefer the x5 from the exterior only but form the interior…ml also catch up the x5
so u should deciede wether u want 2 buy the suv for luxioury or for engine power

I have the ML 350 i was in same position. There is a recession and if BMW doesnt want to get its head out of its ass and work out a good price for you there is no reason to even consider the car. ML 350 is a excellent car i get tons of compliments and very luxerious and roomy. The bmw is made very cheap has alot of plain jane things made out of alot of plastic. Only thing good about BMW is there service plan they have offered but Mercedes even works out a deal on service if you talk them into it. Dont go for the x5 dam it doesnt even have tinted windows.

Thanks Bhavik. I am thinking between 2008 ML 350 and X5 CPO and your reply helped me a lot. I checked Edmunds and lot of people have issues with X5. The only reason I want to go for X5 is maintenance option as you spend so much money and do not want to go for expensive service.
I think I am going for 2008 CPO ML 350

I am a BMW man so it pains me to say that the ML350 wins out for 2 primary reasons: 1st, the BMW X series have known issues with their window mechanism which can lead to an unexpected window roll down and inability to roll it back up. The 2nd is because of the cost of servicing. The engine configuration on the X series requires significant engine dismantling to maintain critical engine components. As a result, I bought my wife an ML350 and it is wonderfully designed and built car.
