Coolant Leak on Bmw 325i
Coolant Leak on a 1988 Bmw 325i.?—By James V
My 1988 Bmw 325i has a coolant leak as indicated by the light inside the vehicle and the fact that it spilled out a ton of cooling fluid when I parked the car. The engine did not show signs of over heating when I popped the hood or checked the temperature gauge. I checked under the car to see where is was leaking from and it is coming out farther back on the block, and I can’t see where its leaking from above, so I don’t know if its the hose, the pump or something else. Any ideas on common problems with coolant leaks in this model?

Your particular BMW engine has one of the most number of coolant/heater hoses in the planet. Since almost all are made of rubber then it deteriorates like any rubber hose with age and heating.
Based on the location you mentioned the leak is most probably coming from the coolant hoses connecting to the heater intake pipes which are located on the bulkhead/firewall (left side/driver’s side slightly to the right).
Or it may be the pipes. One pipe connects directly to the heater core and has an o-ring. The other pipe connects to the water valve which is connected to the heater core, in both instances having o-rings.
You can see slightly more clearly if you position yourself at the left front fender. If need be you may have to remove the heater closing panel at the bulkhead.

Those problems were present in the older versions of the 325i. I feel the newer version is free from such troubles, but only time can tell how well it really performs — fingers crossed
