Driving without a valid MOT

Driving without a valid M.O.T?—By Andrew B
I brought a car yesterday but it has no valid MOT and i need to drive to my mums to put 4 wheels on the car then take it to strait to get MOT’d, is this illegal and if so what would happen if i get caught?

The car is taxed and insured.

If the tyres are illegal then you would not be allowed to drive it on the road. 3 points and £60.00 fine each tyre.you would have to get the tyres to the car.
If they are legal, and you just want to change them then you may drive it to get new tyres on and then drive it to the MOT centre ONLY if the vehicle has been pre booked for the test.

I assume the tyres are not legal on the old rims? if the tyres are not legal then you can take it to have them changed on route but only if you have a pre booked MOT then the car has to go straight there, however be care full as if the police stop you on route and there in a keen mood it’s 3 points plus fine per tyre sorry if it’s downed your spirits though but hope this answer helps.

The only time you can drive with no MOT is when driving direct to the MOT garage that you have pre-booked to have the MOT carried out.

You can’t deviate from the direct route.

You can be penalised financially and with penalty points.

    Hope this helps.

I’m surprised that the Knowledge Partner has got it wrong, or at least not complete.

It’s legal to drive without an MOT to a pre-booked MOT….OR…. to a Bona Fide repairers (VAT Registered) to have work carried out which is essential for the MOT.

If a car is taxed and insured, but without an MOT, you may drive it for the purposes of getting an MOT, to the testing station and back.

You may take the shortest route from where it is to a prebooked MOT test and that will be fine. If caught going anywhere else the car will be taken off you and crushed.

Get the tyres from your mums in another car and fit them to your car as you are only permitted to drive to a pre booked MOT by the most direct route.

As long as you have the appointment booked with the MOT station it is legal to drive it to and from.
