Electrical problem with my 2003 GMC Denali?—Asked by Edward P

For a few years I have had a problem with my 2003 GMC Denali. The GMC dealer can’t find the issue and now the truck is out of warranty.Intermittently, the battery will be drained down to nothing after the SUV has been idol for a few hours. This might happen on one day and then not happen for a month, then 3 days in a row, then normal operation for week, until the next time, etc. etc. etc.

I have a battery pack to jump start the SUV when this happens.

The GMC dealer mentioned that there are about 30 electronic modules and one of the modules might be creating this issue, but at the time of diagnosing, they need for the module to fail. If it doesn’t fail, then they can’t find the problem.

I think this is a common issue and is known by good mechanics experienced with GMC Denalis.

Does any one have any experience with this issue in either a GMC Denali or GMC Yukon?

Hi! Sorry to hear you’re having problems with your truck! I know how hard those intermittent draws can be to find! I have one thing for you to check though, there was a problem with some 03 Denali’s (depending on how the vehicle was optioned out) where the battery would intermittently go dead. There was a factory fix for these that involved reprogramming the BCM. Your dealer can check this for you over the phone I would think, but they will need your VIN #. Just ask them to run a VISS for you and check for any open campaigns. The campaign # for this was 02066. As I said though, this didn’t apply to ALL 03’s. I have also seen a few have problems with the power seat switches sticking on at times, so if it goes dead on you again you may want to take a look at the seat switches too, see if one looks like it is in the “on” position instead of the “at rest” position.
