Depending on where you are traveling, there are several options. One is to go to a campground, and rent a space. These usually are not expensive, you can rent a tent site for around $15-$25 for the night, and sleep in the car. Most campgrounds also have shower houses, so you can also shower and change clothing.
You can stop at most truck stops and sleep in your car. Many of these also have shower facilities for a small fee, and are located on main roads. There is some noise, but it is safe. If you stop at a truck stop, the best thing to do is to be sure to make a purchase (gas, food) there.
In some states, you can stop at highway rest areas and sleep. You are safer in a busy spot than in one that has no activity. Some may have rest room facilities and vending machines, but no showers.
Some Wal*Marts will allow overnight camping (camper, not tent) in their lots. If you want to sleep in your car, go in and check with the manager to be sure it is allowed. Again, at least a small purchase is a good idea. Park at the far end of the lot, so you are not taking a customer’s space near the door.

Why are you sleeping in your car?
If safety is an issue than I would imagine you park (live?) in a dangerous area prone to crime. I would therefore recommend an area with security (cameras, people, etc) or perhaps the exact opposite…an area that is fairly unpopulated like a church parking lot or why not a parking complex?

Lower the drivers window, lock all doors with the key, close the window. Don’t use your key button to lock up because your movements will set of the car alarm.
Lower the front passenger seat fully onto the back seat, and sleep on the lowered seat.
When ever I travelled by car from London to the Adriatic coast I used this method. I pulled into the first lay by once I had crossed from Switzerland into Italy where sleeping in cars was then permitted. The Swiss did not permit it so check the rules. Also make sure it’s going to be warm enough without running the engine.

n the UK: I would park anywhere next to a camper or I would ask a farmer to let me stay on his grounds.
In the US: I did it once and asked at camping sites if they would mind or, in Florida, I was lucky with a Days Inn manager who let me use their parking.

I would say sleep in the back seat with your doors locked (common sense) and try to park in a illuminated area, a big store porking lot under the street lamps.

Yes…it’s legal to sleep in your car in Canada. Safety is another issue as to where your car is parked when doing so.
