Is a high tech rear wheel drive car safer than a simple front drive car?—By Kenneth H
Luxury cars like the infiniti g35 have traction control and some other high tech safety devices. Would a front wheel drive car like the base Altima be safer? That is, do the physics of fwd vs rwd outweigh the tech “advantage” of high tech luxury cars?

Safety really has less to do with accelerating than braking. So, no, i don’t really think it matters either way. Where traction control enters the equation is when you accelerate. incidentally, when i worked as a tow truck operator in colorado, four wheel drives accounted for 75-80% of the accidents in icy weather. It is because inexperienced or cocky drivers thought that 4wd makes them safer. The fact is, almost all cars already have four wheel brakes.

Safer? Well, the rear drive is a simpler lay-out, and generally more reliable in the long run, especially a straight axle. They have been in use for decades, since essentially the beginning. Front drive is not simple, and has a lot of additional parts to break. Most police cruisers and pick-ups have a solid rear axle (Crown Victoria) because they are tough and long lasting and simple to service. Mercedes makes almost all rear drive cars (and all wheel drive).
