replaced Engine for 2006 Mazda Tribute with 45k miles
2006 Mazda Tribute with 45k miles, replaced Engine?—By Kerry
I am interested in a 2006 Mazda Tribute with just over 45,000 miles. The current owner said she has kept records of *all* work done on it.
She said that in September the entire engine was replaced because the “3rd cylinder” was consuming oil at 29%… What does this mean? I believe the engine was replaced with an entirely new one.
I booked it and it’s just booked at just over $14k (if remember corectly) and she is asking $13k, however I am going to try and wrangle her down to $12k or $11.5k if Im lucky. She said the price was negociable
Should I be worried about the first engine beind replaced so quickly?

VERY odd that a newer vehicle would need a new engine with such few miles on it. However, it was probably under warranty and the Mazda dealer did the work. I would check to see if there is any remaining warranty on the vehicle from Mazda.
I have seen this before on a Dodge Caravan (my mother’s, about 10 years ago). They had to replace the whole top end at about 34K miles, and ended up extending her warranty due to this. Might check to see if Mazda did the same. HOWEVER, that being said, if it was due to lack of maintenance or (quite frankly) the first owner “rode it like a broke filly”, then pass.
I would definitely have this checked over thoroughly by a licensed mechanic. Might cost you $50 or so, but it’ll be worth it.
That being said, Tributes are fine vehicles.
(**Side note – If I had a vehicle with a new engine put in before 100K miles, you better believe the price would be “negotiable”.)

Yes. I would take a non-dealer independent mechanic to do a FULL inspection of the car. It might be a Lemon and I would not reccomend buying this. For that price you can do much better try autotrader.com for research.
