You absolutely have to loosen the exhaust. There’s a strap around the flange where the front pipe meets the manifold. Loosen the bolt almost all the way then use a long huge flat screwdriver and a hammer to bang and pry the three retainers (welded to the inside of the strap) away from the pipes. When the strap is loose, slide it back onto the frontpipe. You have to do this on both sides. Then go underneath and loosen the two nuts that hold the hangers at the back of the transmission. The hangers are slotted so you only have to loosen the nuts. Now you can move the frontpipe enough to remove the starter (even with that heat shield on there).
