You can end the sale early only if you state in the listing that you reserve the right to end it early due to the car being for sale locally. If you don’t put in that clause, you can’t sell it any place except through eBay until the end of the sale time. If the car doesn’t reach its “reserve” price, (You have to select that as an option when making the listing.) or no one bids the minimum bid amount. (If you have set a minimum and NOT selected a “reserve” price.) then you have fulfilled your contract with eBay and can do whatever you want with it.

Unless you want to see every scam artist in the world bidding on your car, make sure you say that bids will only be accepted from the U.S. (and/or Canada) and that the buyer must make arrangements to pick up the car AFTER payment. Also allow PayPal, credit cards, cash, etc., but do not allow personal checks or even cashier’s checks and Money Orders unless they are allowed to clear before pick up of the vehicle. PayPal is great for getting a deposit, which you should require within a reasonable time. (48-72 hours is pretty standard)

Listing the car: Make sure you list every good point AND every bad point, preferably with plenty of pictures. This way no one can say that you misrepresented the car. Also state that the car is “as is, where is” and comes with “no warranty”. If it is in writing, you are protected legally.

Do NOT release the car. OR title until you have the money in your bank. These seem like common sense rules to follow, but you won’t believe the sad stories and excuses that scammers will use to try to lower the price or flat out steal the car from you.

Answer any questions that are asked through the “ask a question of seller” form. This way there are no unexpected surprises for you or the buyer.

Do NOT tell anyone the “reserve” price as that is the highest bid you will probably see if you do.

When (not if!) someone contacts you through eBay and tries to buy the car before end of the listing time, do not sell to them. (especially if they offer all kinds of extra money to get it right now.) That is a common scam lead in practice.

    When selling a vehicle on E-bay a seller needs to not only list the cars positive features but to also list the cars negative features as honestly and accurately as possible. Be sure to include as many pictures as you can for both the positive and negative features. You also need to set a reserve price for the absolute minimum that you will accept for the vehicle. A good way to start is to set your opening bid at the reserve price. If you wish to maintain the option of ending the auction early due to the vehicle being for sale locally be sure to state that in your listing. Stating so in bold print is a good idea to be sure that it is not over looked in your add. You should require that a non refundable deposit be made within 24 hours of auction end via pay-pal and that the balance be paid in full within 5 to 7 day of auction end by way of cash in person or by cashiers check. E-bay does not allow full payment of automobiles through pay-pal from my experience and DO NOT take payment of balance in the form of a money order!!! If you do accept payment by means of a personal check be sure to retain both the vehicle and the title until the check clears. Hope this helps.
