Hypermiling is a collection of some idiotic and often illegal and some smart ways of using less fuel. The idiotic and often illegal ways include things like driving 45 miles an hour when everyone else is going 65, overinflating your tires, drafting (tailgating) trucks so you can use them as a wind break to reduce drag on your vehicle, turning your engine off and coasting down hills, turning off your engine at red lights, driving with the windows up and no air conditioner, driving as fast as you can around curves instead of using the brakes, cutting through parking lots to avoid stopping at red lights, and other things. Smart ways include leaving lots of space in front of you on the highway so you don’t have to speed up and hit the brakes all the time, removing all the extra junk from your car, taking routes that have more right turns than left turns, (UPS uses this one and saves a lot of fuel), planning trips outside of the normal heavy traffic times, not letting your car warm up for ten minutes before you drive it, combining errands, using the air conditioning only when needed, driving conservatively and not speeding, not taking off from stops like a drag racer, using cruise control whenever possible, keeping your car tuned with good spark plugs, wires, and air filter, keeping your tires inflated properly, and other assorted common-sense, safe methods. Google it and you will no doubt come up with both safe and sane ways to hypermile, and some completely idiotic, unsafe, and illegal ones. Choose wisely.
