Take a friend with you who knows something about cars (preferably a mechanic, but whatever you can find). Check under the hood. At some places they will let you take a quick “test drive,” even if it’s just a small loop around the facilities. You absolutely want to be able to start (and hopefully drive) the car. Don’t buy anything they won’t let you crank first. At some places, you are only allowed to look at the cars before the auction starts so make sure you find out first.
Have a set price of what you are willing to spend, and be willing to walk away if the bidding goes over that price. You might want to go to a regular auction or two first if you’ve never been to any before, even bid on something small (like $10-$20), just to make sure you can handle it and won’t get all caught up in the frenzy of bidding. If this is a real problem for you, think long and hard before going somewhere where hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars are involved.
Above all, have fun! Just don’t expect to find diamonds and money in the door panels, haha.

I'm a car dealer, and go to dealers auctions quite often, you really never know what you're going to get from an auction, you can test drive down a track, but that's not far enough to tell what it's going to do farther down the road. it's a risk you gotta take.
