2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Good or Bad?—By cahuna
Im looking into buying a used car. I found a 2002 Eclipse GS with 83k miles. Anyone have this car or know how reliable it is? Is it worth buying for $5k

I own a 2001 GT, they are, good, reliable, “slow” cars =).
5k seems like a decent price – if the car is in very good condition.
You need to check a few things first, look online for alot of buyers guides. There are many, many things to check if you want to lower the chances of buying a troubled car – any car make and model will have problems if involved in an accident/mistreated/poorly maintained/ect. I will list a few but you should look for yourself, or find a mechanically inclined friend to come with you to check out the car.
1) Engine – examine the engine, check the oil, check for leaks, check air filter, make sure the engine sounds normal, no weird noises.
2) Cosmetics – does the car look good, check for scratches/dents, see if the paint matches all around. Fixing cosmetic flaws is equally as expensive, and sometimes more expensive than fixing mechanical ones.
3) Tires – quality tires are very expensive, if the cars tires have little tread left talk down the price of the car a bit to compensate. Equally important is the amount of padding left in the brakes, but those are often considerably cheaper to replace, just make sure you check it out so you don’t end up rear ending someone with your new car in the future.
4) Test drive car – does it seem to run good? No hesitation, strange shifting? Weird noises and creaks?
Best of Luck! =)

I would say that’s totally worth buying. I have a 1995 Eclipse and I LOVE my baby. I also bought it for 3000 so I would say that’s an excellent price, either that or something is wrong with it because all the 2000 and up eclipses I looked at were about 6000 and up?? Check it out first see how it runs and everything..if good than id say its a bargain

Of all the models, do not get the Eclipse. It may be an ok car despite the heavy weight and such, but most of all its known for a bad transmission that breaks a lot. It can cost you about $2,000 to fix, and it could well happen at such high mileage. I had a friend to whom it happened, and shes not the only one as well.
