Whens the best time to do an oil check in your car?—By Lee ML
I’ve always believed that when your doing a oil and water check on your car, the car must be obviously parked level (on a flat surface) and you should at least leave the car for 10 minutes to cool down to get a more accurate reading.
But a friend as told me to really check your oil in the car engine, your engine should be best left for at least a few hours to get a more precise reading as oil thickens when its cooled down! Is this true?

To a degree – I always check mine weekly – after a run and allow to cool down for about 20 mins – never let me down yet. When doing an oil change I do the same – give it a run and allow to cool down for 20 mins – as long as it is on a level surface – not a problem.
Oil does thicken slighty when cooled but not enough to have a major impact on the reading – it is better to do it after about 20 mins as the oil has time to return to the sump – giving you a good precise reading. With today’s modern engine oils waiting for a couple of hours isn’t really neccessary

The best time to check is in the morning after having your car parked over night. Why morning because it is the best time you check your car before you do you driving for the day. Beside water, engine oil, power steering oil, you also need to check your battery electrolyte level, wheel pressure etc.
To check engine oil best to leave the engine off for at least a couple of hours long enough to have most of the oil returned to the oil pan for a more accurate check on oil level and to examine the oil condition too!

As a professional driver who operates a government vehicle, we are required to check the fluids before we get into the vehicle and start it. That ensures there is oil in the engine. To accurately gage the level, check the dip stick 1/2 hour after stopping the engine, provided it has reached operating temperature.

Hi,Here I want to know When is the best time to check your engine oil?
Is it best to check it when it is cold and all the oil is drained back into the oil pan or after the car has run for awhile?

Engine oil can be checked when the engine is cold, engine off. That gives you the most accurate level.
To cover all bases for reference, transmission fluid is the opposite…it should be checked with the transmission at full operating temperature, in park, on a level surface, with the engine idling.
