How To Check Your Vehicle’s History

Tips:

  • If the VIN doesn’t have exactly 17 characters, the car was manufactured from before 1981 and won’t be in any vehicle history database.
  • Beware of a car that was flooded or salvaged. Water can cause damage that doesn’t show up right away, and cosmetic fixes can mask many problems that will crop up later.

AutoCheck and Carfax are great resources for vehicle history reports. AutoCheck reports seem to be a little easier for a basic user to understand, however both are great services and worth the money.

Keep in mind that not all accidents or repairs will show up on a report, so always make sure you have the vehicle thoroughly evaluated in addition to the history report. Good luck!

CarFax is the best source of this kind of information. But it’s important to understand that their information comes from a variety of sources such as insurance company accident claims, and is not always perfectly accurate or up to date. However, there is no better source, so it’s the best currently available.

Well, there isn’t always the same way to check a vehicles history.

If can get the maintainence records that is probably the best, but most people cannot come across these so carfax is probably the next best. However, in the rare case that even Carfax has little to no info on the car then check the engine, transmission, and suspention they will tell the truth if you know what to look for.
