How To Find a GM Certified Used Vehicle

Purchasing a certified used vehicle?—By KristinaMaria
I am looking to purchase a used vehicle and am thinking of purchasing certified used. I have thought of going with a BMW and have found several with low miles that I think are for a good price. Many of my friends tell me that they are good cars but expensive to repair. Would I be better off purchasing say a Ford or other make because parts would be less expensive? Which would give me the best service overall. I drive less than 20,000 a year and have had my current car for 10 years, so I like to keep a vehicle and to not have to drive the latest and greatest. Thanks for your time in answering this question.

There are a lot of factors to consider when buying a car, so it really depends on what you’re looking for. Repair & maintenance costs are just one such factor.

It’s true that BMWs are more expensive to fix than Fords (or any other non-import, non-luxury brand), but a big part of BMWs appeal is their “exclusivity”. They cost more to buy, more to maintain, and more to repair. You can get a 3-year old used BMW 3-series for around the same price as a fully loaded brand new domestic (or some import’s) sedan, but there is no doubt that most people will assume whoever’s driving the 3-year old BMW is more affluent. Some people think it’s worth it, some don’t.

From a strictly financial point of view, buying a BMW isn’t really cost effective. Feature-for-feature, you will save a lot of money by going with any non-luxury brand (import or domestic).

Check out your local Honda dealer. The Accord EX-L either 4 or 6 Cyl is a great luxury type vehicle with a great Certified Warranty. Not terribly expensive to buy and relatively inexpensive to maintain and service.

As the Car & Driver and Motor Trend Award winners for best overall vehicle coupled with the high resale value and it works out to a great investment.

The 2003-2007 were all the same body style and come with loads of extras like heated leather seats, 6 disc CD Changer, and XM Radio to name a few.

The Coupe is a great “image car” and the sedan is more practicle but still has great lines.

Check them out and tell me what you think.

The BMW is definitely an eye catcher. But, like your friend said, repairs are expensive. Are you worried about looks or reliability? The Ford Taurus is a very dependable car. And you can find 07 Taurus on any Ford lot. Most of them with less than 12,000 miles. Make sure the dealership is a certified pre-owned dealership. Not all are.

The Taurus is very reliable and from what I have heard, very fuel effecient. I’ve heard up to 30 mpg.

But, the Taurus does have the “grandma” label attached to it. But, maybe they know something we don’t.
