OK so it’s really late at night and you pull up to a traffic light and it’s red. You are waiting and waiting and there are no cars around.I’ve heard if you flash your high beams that will help make the light turn green.I’ve also heard if you drive close to the pedestrian crosswalk and back up it can trigger some kind of sensor.So are these urban legends? What’s the truth?

You can’t make the light change by flashing your headlights. That’s urban legend.There is a sensor cut into the pavement of most intersections, and sometimes they don’t pick up just one car, so yes – moving the car can sometimes help.

They are all hoaxes. Just wait it out. Make sure you windows are locked for security. Traffic lights are still too dumb to support that kind of image recognition. If you keep trying stuff, soon, it’s your turn to get a green and whatever you just tried may appear to have worked.

Make it jealous!!! Seriously, if it bothers you to wait for the light to change and there is no one around, make a right turn on red, then make a U-turn, then make another right turn, red or green.

some intersections have buried sensors. IF there are pedestrian controls located on the corners, there is usually lane sensors. If you don’t see any pedestrian buttons, probably no sensors. BUT if you look above the signal lights and see a small tube pointed down the highway, each direction, cross direction, etc, you may have an out. Some time soon, when you see and emergency vehicle, note if they always get the green…if so, that little “tube” has an optical sensor in it to force the light green depending upon oncoming emergency traffic. YOU will have to get a technician to build you a signal flash emitter so you too can force the green. Lots of technical stuff and expensive!
