What kind of Motorcycle to purchase

What kind of Motorcycle should I purchase?–By Ben
I am currently seventeen. I am roughly 5 11 and about 210 lbs. I am new to motorcycles and wanted a bike that would be my first and primary vehicle. I also wanted something that i wouldn’t get bored with too soon. I will be off to college this upcoming fall so i wanted something that would be reliable. I plan on taking the Rolling Wheels instruction course. my only dilemma is whether or not to buy a Ninja 250r or a Ninja 500r. I like the body style but I wanted a secondary opinion on which of those two or another bike that might fit me well. I wanted to steer my way closer to the sport style bikes.

It all boils down to size and comfort. A 250r would be very small for someone your size and the 500r would be a good starter bike that would last you for quite some time until you are ready to upgrade to a larger one. Also since you are new to the bike world the 250 and 500 numbers on the model of the bike are descriptions of the CCs. The bigger the number the more CCs and the more power, size, and weight.

A ninja 650r is a great starter bike if you want to get into sport motorcycles. In my opinion, noo waay should you get a 600cc superbike. That is a racing bike that has had turn signals, etc. added to make it street legal. All it takes is one slip of the throttle and next thing you know you’ve hit the pavement. As a new rider, you dont want to be scared to death of your bike. Cautious, yes, but not scared. The 650r will beat a 600cc bike off the line because it has a v-twin so it pumpes out more torque. But after a few seconds the 600 will pass it up quickly. A 650r is not near as responsive or high-revving as a 600cc bike. I would also look at the suzuki GS-500. It is another 500cc bike you could consider. Any of the bikes i have listed would be perfect starter bikes. Just go to a dealer and sit on each one and see which one feels best to you. Hope i helped!

The Suzuki GS500, SV650 or any of the Ninja twins might suit you. My advice, however, is to start with a dual sport bike. You are big enough to manage a KLR650 or DR650 even as a beginner. Learn to ride loose surfaces, use their off-road ability to practice bike control skills out of traffic, and ride them places you just can’t go on a pure street bike.

There are lots more reasons than those, but I wanted to get you thinking in a different direction, not that there is anything wrong with sport bikes, but that the riding experience is so much more with a bike that can go just about anywhere.

I just bought my first bike 3 weeks ago. It is a 2009 Suzuki GS500F. I am 5′9 205 and this bike is perfect for me. Pretty much the ninja 500 and GS500F are pretty even as far as performance wise. I think the ninja edges the GS a little bit but nothing you can notice. As long as you take the the course I would say stick with the 500’s. If you go with the 250 ninja you are just going to get bored with it and probably want something else after a couple of months. Well hope that helps, good luck and be smart.

Ninja 250 is an awesome beginner bike but you’ll probably get bored pretty quick, i say go with the 500r, Honda cbr600,Yamaha R6 or a gsx-r 600…i would get the Yamaha…as long as you take the course and get enough practice 600cc wont be too much to handle
