Which is a smarter choice as a first car?—by NICK®
-all are under $1800
-All have between 120k-225k miles
-All run
-All in fair-good condition
-Automatic Transmissions

1990-1992 Lexus LS400
1986-1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E or 260E
1991-1995 Infiniti G20
1989-1994 BMW 525i or 535i
1987-1993 BMW 735i or 735iL
1987-1990 Acura Legend sedan
1988 Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe
1993-1997 Volvo 850 sedan
1990-1991 Audi 5000 sedan
1993-1995 Audi 100CS
1990-1993 Honda Accord (A little bland though)

I’ll take other considerations if you have any.. my list of musts is:
-Automatic transmission
-reliability
-cheap to insure
-nice looking
-I prefer European and Asian cars over domestic
-style
-comfort
-value
-safety, needs to have driver and passenger airbags

Any older high mileage European car will be a maintenance nightmare. Sure they look great, have great lines and a lot of style and when they were new they were King of the Hill. But as they age those high tech systems fail and those overengineered parts are expensive and so is the labor. Old BMW, M-B and Audi cars are very unreliable and expensive to maintain.

If you are working within a limited budget stick with a known source for economy and reliability. Buy an Acura/Honda.

It looks like you’re looking for a big luxurious car at a budget price. You say you don’t care for American vehicles, but it seems that a Lincoln Town Car fits exactly what you want. It’s also less expensive to maintain and repair than an old European car.
